Representatives of the Nobel Committee announced this at a ceremony in Stockholm.

This is the second mechanism of immunological tolerance after central tolerance. It occurs in the periphery of the immune system, after T and B cells leave the primary lymphoid organs. The main goal of peripheral tolerance is to prevent autoimmune T and B cells that have escaped central tolerance from causing autoimmune diseases. Peripheral tolerance also helps prevent an immune response to harmless food antigens and allergens.
