Developed by researchers from the Society for Research on Nicotine & Tobacco’s Treatment Research Network, an international professional organization focused on nicotine and tobacco science, the guidance advises clinicians to discuss e-cigarettes as one evidence-based treatment option alongside nicotine replacement therapy during shared decision-making conversations with patients who smoke.
In 2021, the US Preventive Services Task Force concluded that evidence was insufficient to recommend e-cigarettes for smoking cessation. According to Rigotti, those recommendations predated much of the evidence now available.
