The researchers also identified a key factor causing these effects: the enzyme hexokinase 2, which plays an important role in sugar metabolism. When this enzyme is overly active in perivascular adipose tissue, fat cells accumulate more fat, release more inflammatory signals, and produce substances that damage the lining of blood vessels.
Epigenetic drugs can complement existing treatments and potentially reduce the risk of developing early vascular dysfunction leading to a heart attack or stroke.
